My first completed figure for 2026. The beginning of the year has been difficult with so much snow and illnesses. I've just recovered from a bad case of RSV. This cutie is made out of polymer clay and painted with heat set gemini paints. She can be a nurse, resident, lab technology, or just chilling in a matching green outfit.
I started out with polymer clay in a silicone anime type figure mold. There are so many of these out there now. I made a strong wire armature, This is what the mold looked like and here is figure assembled together. A benefit to a silicone mold verse plaster is that you can use many different clay types in the silicone mold. But I just stuck with polymer clay for this figure. Here I am baking the clay parts for the first time. I got a new oven. In the past I used a Deni convection oven. This one is an SPT convection oven with digital controls. Temp can only be controlled in 25C increments but there is a 275F setting. And this model came with an extender ring so that the oven can hold higher sculptures too.
I first made the pin holes before baking so that I didn't have to drill holes after baking. Now I cut wire to size to attach the arms to the body. Actually, for this figure I did not change the post from the initial mold. I think it works ok for this figure though. For the head, it was a little bit more tricky since I had the wire already to cover the head part. I added the back of the head in clay and then baked. It was not held together too well, so after the first baking, I added more clay wedged in between the neck and the face. I started with the pants, then baked. Then worked on the shirt and baked again. To make the clothes I used the pasta machine to roll clay into thin sheets. Maybe it could have been made thinner, but I made this work. Usually I do not use different colored clays but I was mixing up a new batch and the color happened to favor green scrub color to me, so I figured why not go in that direction for this figure. I use this sanding or polishing box that I got off of temu. I like the style with the holes in the front. It is most comfortable for me to work this way. The size I got is the almost 29cm wide one. I tried a smaller one but the holes were too close together and it wasn't as comfortable as a result. I worked on the hair last. I did the long hair style as another anchor point for the head to the rest of the body. Using Gemini heat set paints. The great thing is that they will dry instantly so I dont have to worry if the paint is dry enough before packing it away. But the rest is that the sculpture is going back into the oven multiple times and could risk damage as well. When I paint with heat set paints, I paint the front half of the figure, bake it and then paint the back half. This is much different painting with air dry paints as I paint by same color.
